Wonderful day as The Elgiva reopens

After weeks of careful preparation and planning, The Elgiva reopened on Saturday night (25/7/20) with the Oscar-laden film Parasite. Wearing masks made by our army of volunteers, staff and ushers were ready to greet the first patrons through the door with a round of applause.

Customers quickly adapted to the new one-way system and made use of the variety of hand-sanitising points while observing the social distancing guidance. Operating at reduced capacity to ensure plenty of space, the theatre team guided customers to seats in the auditorium, where they settled in to watch the Korean masterpiece that scooped Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Theatre Manager David Cooper said: “It’s fantastic to be open again; it’s felt very empty without our customers, as they really are the lifeblood of any theatre. The staff and volunteers have worked incredibly hard to get everything ready and to ensure it’s really safe for the public, so it’s wonderful to see their efforts rewarded with the trust of our customers. Parasite was a film that had been much-requested before the lockdown, but our screening in April had to be cancelled. It’s terrific to have the chance to show it at last!”

In accordance with Government guidelines, we will be showing films and recorded theatre streams in July and August. Upcoming titles include Armando Iannucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood starring Tom Hanks and James McAvoy in Cyrano de Bergerac, captured live in the West End earlier this year.

Several patrons were happy to share their thoughts on the opening night:

Liz Densley “I’m delighted it’s open! It looks very well organised and safe.”
Jon Foster: “It was great to be back, and all your hard work made it feel very safe. Looking forward to David Copperfield!”
Neil Herrington: “Welcome back. You’ve been sorely missed.”

Posting in a local community Facebook group, Ruth Plummer said: “Spent a brilliant evening at The Elgiva, well thought out and excellent social distancing plans. We will be back.“
