This is a casual, zero-hours position with no guaranteed minimum hours. Work will be offered according to the theatre’s programme and operational requirements.

Technical Manager
JOB PURPOSE
To provide technical support for performances, events, hires, and activities at The Elgiva and associated venues. The Casual Technical Theatre Technician will assist in the delivery of professional technical services including lighting, sound, stage management and event set-up, ensuring events are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
The role requires flexibility and availability to work evenings, weekends, and occasional daytime shifts in line with the theatre’s programme.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Technical Operations
- Assist in the preparation, operation, and dismantling of technical equipment for performances, events and film screenings.
- Operate lighting, sound, projection for the shows and events.
- Assist visiting companies, artists, and hirers with their technical requirements.
- Carry out stage changeovers, set builds, rigging, focusing, and technical preparations.
Event Delivery
- Provide technical support during live performances and events.
- Work closely with the Technical Manager and venue team to ensure smooth event delivery.
- Assist with the loading and unloading of touring productions, equipment, and scenery.
- Support the efficient turnaround of events and venue hires.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Ensure all technical activities are carried out in accordance with current health and safety legislation and theatre best practice.
- Maintain safe working practices when working at height, handling equipment, and undertaking manual handling tasks.
- Report faults, hazards, incidents, and equipment defects promptly.
- Assist with maintaining a safe environment for audiences, performers, contractors, and staff.
Equipment & Maintenance
- Assist in the maintenance, testing, and safe storage of technical equipment.
- Help ensure technical areas, control rooms, and backstage spaces are kept clean and organised.
- Participate in routine inspections and maintenance of lighting, sound, and stage equipment.
- Monitor stock levels of technical consumables and report requirements to the Technical Manager.
Customer Service & Team Working
- Provide a professional and welcoming service to visiting companies, artists, hirers, and customers.
- Work effectively as part of the wider theatre team.
- Promote a positive image of The Elgiva and the Council in all interactions.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the role as reasonably required.

The role requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, bank holidays, and occasional daytime shifts. The post holder will undertake manual handling activities and may be required to work at height following appropriate training.
The post holder is required to adhere to the Council’s health and safety, data protection, safeguarding, and equalities policies. The list of duties is not to be regarded as exhaustive, and flexibility will be required in the interests of the Council and its customers.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Knowledge
- Experience of working in a theatre, live events, entertainment, or related technical environment.
- Understanding of theatre technical operations, including lighting, sound, and stagecraft.
- Awareness of health and safety requirements within a live entertainment environment.
- Experience operating technical equipment for performances or events is desirable.
- Experience working as part of a team in a customer-focused environment.
Skills
- Good practical and technical problem-solving skills.

- Ability to work safely and efficiently in a live event environment.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently when required and as part of a wider team.

Desirable
- Knowledge of digital audio, lighting control, and projection systems.
- First Aid qualification.
- IPAF, PASMA, or working at height training.
