Three police officers distracted by their own issues escort a prisoner to possibly his final destination in Lalith Rathnayake’s slow-burning Sri Lankan psychological drama Riverstone.
What sounds like a typical police-vs-criminal procedural quickly deepens into a subtle, Buddhist-tinged probing of morality and forgiveness during times of bloodshed, enriched by beautifully balanced script that exchanges action for psychology and four riveting lead performances that would make even the biggest Hollywood productions green with envy.
Riverstone just added the Singapore International Film Festival’s Best Director and Best Performance prizes to its impressive recent festival haul.
It also picked up awards at this year’s Shanghai and Kolkata Film Festivals.
